Frequently Asked Questions
For Individuals (Pro Per / Self-Represented)
First time using a process server? Here's how it works:
It's simpler than you might think! Just call us or submit your documents online. Tell us who needs to be served and their address. We'll attempt service (usually within 3-5 days), update you on every attempt, and provide you with a GPS-verified Proof of Service to file with the court. No legal background required—we guide you through the entire process.
I don't have an attorney. Can you still help me?
Absolutely! We serve many individuals who are handling their own legal matters (called "pro per" or "self-represented"). Whether it's a divorce, restraining order, small claims case, custody dispute, or eviction, we provide the exact same professional service we give to law firms. We'll explain everything in plain English and answer all your questions.
What types of cases do individuals typically need served?
Common cases we help individuals with include: Divorce papers, Restraining orders, Small claims lawsuits, Eviction notices, Child custody/support documents, Landlord-tenant disputes, and Civil lawsuits. If you're not sure whether your documents need professional service, just call us—we're happy to help.
Will you explain what I need to do?
Yes! We understand the legal process can be confusing if you're not familiar with it. We'll walk you through what needs to be served, explain your options, and make sure you understand each step. After service, we'll provide documentation that's ready to file with the court.
Do I pay the same price as law firms?
Yes—we have the same transparent pricing for everyone. Personal service starts at $145. There are no hidden fees or different pricing tiers. You get the same professional, GPS-verified service that attorneys rely on.
General Questions
How long does process serving take?
Standard service is 3-5 business days. Rush service (24-48 hours) and same-day service are available for urgent matters like restraining orders.
What if the person avoids being served?
California law allows substitute service after reasonable diligence (typically 3+ unsuccessful attempts). We also offer skip tracing to locate hard-to-find individuals. If someone is actively evading service, we have strategies to handle these situations.
What is substitute service?
When personal service isn't possible, California law (CCP 415.20) allows leaving documents with a competent adult at the person's home or workplace, followed by mailing a copy. Service is complete 10 days after mailing.
What if they refuse to take the papers?
If we identify the correct person and they refuse, we can leave the papers at their feet or nearby. This still constitutes valid service in California.
Do you serve on weekends?
Yes, we serve 7 days a week. Weekend and evening attempts are often the most effective for people who work during the day.
What documents can you serve?
We serve all civil process including summons, complaints, subpoenas, restraining orders, eviction notices, divorce papers, small claims, child custody papers, and more.
How do I know when service is complete?
You'll receive updates on every attempt via text or email. Once served, we provide a GPS-verified Proof of Service that's ready for court filing.
Can you file my documents with the court?
Yes! We provide court filing services at Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, and Yolo County Superior Courts. This is especially helpful for individuals who aren't familiar with the filing process.
Are you licensed?
Yes. National Document Services is a California Registered Process Server. We're fully licensed, bonded ($50K), and insured ($2M liability coverage).
How much does process serving cost?
Personal service starts at $145, substitute service at $165, skip tracing at $99, and court filing at $75. Same-day rush adds $50. Get an exact quote →
